Rainfall-runoff modelling in central Portugal

Subject: Stepwise rainfall-runoff modelling in small forested catchments in central Portugal
Required training and knowledge:

academic background: Hydrology, Physical Geography, Soil Sciences, etc.
experience: preferably, some practical knowledge of rainfall-runoff models, especially LISEM

Status (training or thesis): Internship or thesis
Time / duration: after mid August , 5+ months
Content description:

The internship will take place in the framework of the HIDRIA project,  financed by the Portuguese national Foundation for Science and Technology. To improve the knowledge and understanding of the factors and processes that determine the hydrological behaviour of the forested foothills of the Serra do Caramulo in central Portugal, the HIDRIA project is applying the event-based Limburg Soil Erosion Model (LISEM) to small experimental catchments with contrastting land covers (i.e. dominated by eucalypt plantations or by Maritime Pine stands). More specifically, the HIDRIA project foresees the development of a stepwise approach of applying LISEM, so as to assess the modelling implications of existing data constraints and to establish priorities for additional field and laboratory data gathering.
The first phase of the stepwise approach - heavily relying on literature for parametrisation and calibration of "uncertain" model parameters - is now being carried out, so that the internship will involve the following aspects:

  • sensitivity analysis of the best model parametrisation(s) of the first phase and identification of the most influential, "uncertain" model parameters;
  • design and implementation of a sampling scheme for reducing uncertainty in one or more selected model parameter(s);
  • design and implementation of a sampling scheme for assessment of within- catchment model predictions (e.g. overland flow production).
