Organisation

ESS CC Organisation picture The Group Earth System Science and Climate Change (ESS CC) consists of four research clusters, with their own coordinators (since 2009). The group is a functional merger of the chair group Earth System Sciences in the Center of Water and Climate of Wageningen University (headed by Prof. Dr. Pavel Kabat) and the team Land Atmosphere Interactions of Alterra (headed by Eddy Moors) on April 2006. As such, the group invests in education at BSc, MSc and PhD levels, but also in competitive contract research on both fundamental and more policy oriented questions.

In January 2007, the University group Integrated Water Management (headed by Prof Wim Cofino) joined ESS CC. With Prof Pier Vellinga joining ESS CC in the same year enabled the group to create a climate change portal combining the coordination of the efforts of Wageningen UR in the two major national research programs "Climate changes Spatial Planning" and "Knowledge for Climate".

At present, ESS CC has a total staff of approximately 40 persons, 5 visiting scientist and approximately 15 running PhD research projects in different stages of completion.

Since November 2006 the entire ESS CC group, including the majority of its PhD students, is accommodated in the Atlas building. The housing on the same floor with two other Chair Groups of Wageningen UR – the Environmental System Analysis (Prof Leemans) and Meteorology and Air Quality (Profs Holtslag and Krol) – , is a special advantage which helps in facilitating our extensive collaboration in research and education.
