In 2006, the Chair group Earth System Sciences (ESS) also joined the Centre.

The chair groups HWM, AEW, SEG, ESA and ESS belong to WIMEK, which is the Wageningen contribution to the National Research School Sense (www.sense.nl). Prof. Leemans (MSA) directs WIMEK and chairs SENSE. MAQ cooperates with four Chair Groups of Utrecht University in the Buys Ballot Research School, which is a school directed to the Study of Fundamental Processes in the Climate System, with PER&C and WIMEK. IWE is connected to the Research School Ceres.

The research schools represent the main mechanism for scientific cooperation and quality control within Wageningen University. CWK has chosen to organize the research of both its University and Alterra divisions according to the structure of the research programs of the research schools, in particular WIMEK and CERES. The mono- and interdisciplinary approaches taken by the research schools accommodate all research themes of CWK. Four research themes are defined.
