Current Education of the Centre for Water and Climate

The Centre offers education on different levels.
The Centre contributes to three BSc curricula (Soil, Water and Atmosphere, Environmental Sciences and International Land and Water Management), five MSc curricula (Hydrology and Water Quality, International Land and Water Management, Environmental Sciences, Earth System Sciences, Meteorology and Air Quality) and coordinates several PhD courses for different research schools.

  • SEG: Prof van der Zee chairs the Boussinesq Center, which, among others, promotes coordination of hydrological education within Dutch Universities.
  • IWE contributes to the Agrimundus MSc. in Sustainable Development of Agriculture, a program offered by WUR, CNEARC (France), KVL (Denmark) and the Universities of Cork, Catania and Madrid.
IWE also hopes to work in the new Research Master of African Studies (in which Wageningen and Leiden collaborate).
  • AEW contributes to the education programs of IMARES.
  • MAQ: In a densely populated country like the Netherlands, the quality of the air is of high concern. MAQ provides the only Dutch academic education in this specific field.

The Centre hosts a range of PhD students. Research topics stem from both DOW and Alterra, both parties may take care of the daily supervision but a professor has the overall responsibility.  Most of the students are associated with the research school SENSE, while the others are connected to PER&C or Ceres. Up to 2006, no groups within the Centre are involved with commercial education as part of the Wageningen Business School. Preparations are made to start a commercial MSc in the field of Water and Climate.

The Centre is extensively engaged in capacity building both under leadership of Chair groups (IWE, HWM and ESA) and Alterra (for example the program to transfer knowledge about the environmental risks of pesticides to countries in transition and international courses on water management under the ILRI flag). These projects are funded through LNV, DGIS, NUFFIC and EU. A better integration of these courses in regional initiatives and with the whole package of professional courses of WUR is envisaged.
