Models

All our model may be run on a spatial basis, i.e. both output and input are in the form of maps. Simulation takes place for grid cells with a typical size of 25 - 250 m. Some of the models include spatial interaction, i.e. neighboring cells influence each other.

Our specialism is to run chains of linked models, so that a complete causal chain, from human interference through abiotic and biotic changes to effects on biodiversity can be simulated. Models can be coupled through simple output - input relations, but there can also be a dynamic coupling where there is feedback from one model to another. A typical chain is SMART (soil chemistry) - SUMO - (vegetation succession) - LARCH (faunal population viability). Many applications are run for MNP, typically country-wide and with a spatial resolution of 250 m.

At present we are working on the inclusion of climatic effects in our models but we also have a strong focus on model quality. This implies e.g. extended technical testing of models, validation of model output against real data, version management and model documentation. Quality status 'A' has now been achieved for three of our models.
