Galileo transmits precision data on fields and farms

Future forecasts predict that farmers and other agricultural stakeholders will increasingly benefit from satellite location and navigation services in the future, for instance, to gain accurate and timely information on when to plant and where to apply fertiliser. The FieldFact project investigates such potentials of satellite information in agriculture.

Europe’s Global Navigation Satellite System – nicknamed Galileo – aims to be operational in 2008. Galileo will be interoperable with GPS, while providing better accuracy, better availability and better reliability. Galileo will offer new services with the aim of adding value for customers.

Along with raising awareness of Galileo’s potentials for the agricultural sector, FieldFact also promotes the European platform and associated agricultural services.

Potential applications of Galileo in agriculture

  • Parcel measurement
  • Field and farm geo-coding and identification
  • Livestock and product logistics management
  • Soil and crop sampling
  • Data provision for variable application rates of water, crop protection measures and fertiliser
  • Coordinate-guided steering
  • Precision animal disease management
  • Individual animal tracking throughout Europe

The FieldFactproject investigates the benefits and opportunities of Galileo in agriculture. The project increases the awareness of the sector in the potentials of Galileo and promotes the platform and associated services in agriculture.

Satellite location and navigation is increasingly used in agriculture to provide the farmer and other players in agriculture accurate and timely information on where and when activities take place.
