Forest Ecosystems

The team of forest ecosystems at Alterra focuses on research questions in the area of sustainable forest management and ecology. We do this on various levels of scale, ranging from the ecology and silviculture of individual tree species to landscape and European scale forest scenario studies. Our team consists of 19 enthusiastic people, working on projects in the Netherlands, Europe, and various tropical forest areas outside the EU.
Our recent activities range from detailed ecological research in Dutch forest to large scale modelling of European forest processes. We also study carbon pools and dynamics in tropical peat forest area

The team of forest ecosystems focus on four (4) research project lines:

Projects Forests Ecology
Projects Forests and Climate Modeling
Projects International Biodiversity & Ecosytem Services
Projects Forest Genetics

We conduct independent, scientific research of high quality and the findings are reported in 50 -70 publications yearly. Team members are well connected to national and international research groups and consortia, and often participate in or lead international (EU-funded) projects. We maintain intensive contacts with policy makers, forest management organisations, and other stakeholders in the forest sector in order to keep informed on latest developments and current research questions.
