Dr. E.J.M.M. (Eric) Arets

Eric Arets

Junior Researcher (Tropical forest ecology and management)

Education
MSc (1998), Utrecht University (Landscape and vegetation ecology)
PhD (2005), Utrecht University (Tropical forest ecology and management)

Key qualifications
Main field of expertise is tropical forest ecology and management. I have gained experience with both long-term field studies and simulation models.

Tree population dynamics
• Field study on the population dynamics of tropical trees.
• Modelling population dynamics of tropical trees using spatially explicit, individual based models.
• Dynamics of tree recruitment in tropical forests.

Sustainable forest management
• Evaluating long-term sustainability of different management scenarios for tropical forests using simulation models.

Biodiversity
• Evaluating the long-term effects of logging on tree diversity and species composition.
• Development of a database to digitise Herbarium specimen for more efficient use in biodiversity research.
• Studies on explanations for maintenance of high tree diversity in tropical forests.

Other qualifications
• Computer: ArcGIS, C++, Visual Basic, SPSS, MS Access.
• Coordinating: Supervisor at the Tropenbos-Guyana field sites during field work there (daily management and logistics).
