Key interests
My research focuses on behavioural decisions of birds and mammals, and their effects on population dynamics and community functioning. The basic idea is that population sizes and community patterns can to a large extent be predicted, at least in principle, from processes acting at the individual level. The basis of my work is formed by foraging theory and migration theory. My main line of research is on plant-herbivore interactions, notably between avian/mammalian herbivores and their food plants. I focus on rules of thumb used by animals to exploit their resources. Emphasis is on foraging behaviour as this has a link with trophic interactions but is also related to more applied concepts such as carrying capacity. Current topics of study are foraging scale, foraging currencies, search tactics, patch and habitat use, and grazing impact. The main study systems are swans foraging on pondweeds, beavers foraging on willows, and geese foraging on grass, which are, in many circumstances, mutualistic relationships in an ecological sense. The approach taken is a combination of field, experimental and modelling work.
