Specialisation
Alterra is engaged in policy making and management on a local, national and international level. We produce readily applicable knowledge and expertise enabling rapid and adequate solutions to practical problems. To conduct our work in a optimal manner we have various research facilities at our disposal such as biological laboratories, databases, profiles of national and international soils and DNA-techniques. The emphasis of the research of Alterra is concentrated on 5 specialisations.

Research topics
International focus on research Alterra with five research centres at Alterra (600 staff) and a cooperation with 20 chairs in Wageningen University (300 staff) has a wide range of expertise on the environmental issues we meet today. In this very wide range, we distinct a clear focus on four main topics: rural development, biodiversity and ecosystem services, climate change and adaptation, and risk management. These topics find their roots within the five specialisations (i.e. soil, ecosystems, geo-information, landscape, and water and climate).
