The Alterra Quality System for Simulation Models and Data Files
Quality assurance for models and data files is complex in a research institute such as Alterra. New insights and developments and flexible application of models and files requires dynamism. At the same time, validated and documented models and files are needed, which are transferable and have a proven level of quality. Alterra’s quality assurance system thus balances chaotic dynamism with ordered stasis.
The quality of operational models and data files is assured through a process of continual improvement and demonstrated product quality. For product quality, objective and verifiable criteria are developed. These ensure the integrity of the entire model, from the scientific description, the mathematical translation, the statistical quality and the technical implementation to management and maintenance. The safeguarding of data files is similar.
The quality of 30 Alterra and LEI models and data files was recently examined. The findings were reported in 2004.
General conclusions were that the scientific foundation is sound, but documentation leaves much to be desired, and quality assurance is too easily pushed to the background. Some €1 million is available to improve the quality of 15 of these models and files.
In recent years, quality assurance for models and data files has been anchored in the broader Alterra quality system, which is certified according to the ISO 9001:2000 norm.
