Unit: Alterra

After the devastating tsunami of 26 December 2004, Wageningen UR has installed a "Tsunami Task Force" which explores the ways in which our organization can contribute to the reconstruction of tsunami-affected areas. An inventory of our expertise, relevant for the reconstruction activities, has been compiled into a catalogue and distributed to organizations in the tsunami-affected areas.

In addition to offering our own expertise, Wageningen UR also wants to offer professionals from the tsunami-affected countries the opportunity to develop and enhance their own expertise to cope with the impacts of the disaster and to work on the sustainable development and management of land and water resources.

Alterra-ILRI is a specialised unit within Wageningen UR, which is dedicated to the dissemination of knowledge and skills on sustainable management of land and water in developing countries. Not coincidentally, Alterra-ILRI was founded after the major flood disaster that struck The Netherlands in 1953. Alterra-ILRI now has a record of 50 years experience on land reclamation and improvement.

Alterra-ILRI will organize their annual International Course on Land Drainage from 5 September to 25 November 2005 (for the 44th time). You can read further details on this course by clicking the hyperlink.

Wageningen UR offers 6 fellowships to mid career professionals from tsunami-affected countries to participate in this course. The application procedure for these fellowships has already started. You can find more details on International Course on Land Drainage .
