The European Forest Institute is a non-governmental organisation. EFI's mission is to conduct, promote and co-operate in the research of forests, forestry and forest products at the pan-European level. The institute makes the results of the research known to all interested parties, notably in the areas of policy formulation and implementation, in order to promote the conservation and management of forests for producing goods and services in a sustainable way. Subjects EFI concentrates on are: forest ecology and management, forest products, markets and socio-economics, policy analysis, and forest resources and information.  Currently EFI has over 140 member organisations from 38 countries, of which 10 member countries are from outside Europe. EFI has more than 30 ongoing projects,  among which a forestry databank, analysis of policy networks regarding timber certification, and scenario analyses of the impacts of major international changes on the European forest cluster.
