The team Land Atmosphere Interactions of the Centre for Water and Climate aims at better understanding of the relationship between the terrestrial biosphere and the climate. It studies among others landsurface-atmosphere exchange of carbon dioxide, water and energy using models at patch and regional scales. Two of these models are the Regional Atmospheric Modelling System (RAMS, mesoscale weather model developed by Colorado State University, USA) and SWAPS-C (land surface scheme, developed by Alterra). In order to have a better representation of the land surface in RAMS, SWAPS-C has been coupled to RAMS version 4.3 a couple of years ago. However, over the past years RAMS has gone through a lot of changes to get a better representation of the atmosphere and the dynamics involved leading to RAMS version 6.0. As a result an update is needed to couple this new RAMS version to the most recent version of SWAPS-C. This will include modifications in the source code of the models for this coupling, but also modifications to input datasets.
Depending on the progress of this internship and the time available, it is also possible to apply this coupled system to investigate the exchange between land surface and atmosphere for an existing situation. A comparison between the new version and the already existing version should give insight in the difference between both versions.
